How Long Do Emperor Penguins Live?
The emperor penguins live in very extreme conditions where the cold would be unbearable for
most species living in the planet, including humans. Aslo, they make long migrations where they
spend several days without food, walking over the ice shelf and then they stoically take care of their
offspring during weeks under these adverse conditions. Despite this hard way of life, the average life
expectancy of emperor penguins is up to 20 years.
These weather conditions give them in return the advantage of living far from humans, keeping
them away from pollution and hunting.
Unfortunately Emperor penguin chicks have a 90% mortality rate during the first year of life due to
predators such as giant petrels and skuas or the neglect of their parents.
